NOTE: A popular spring event in Niagara-on-the-Lake is the Wine & Herb festival taking place on weekends this May. Here’s a news release on the event and how to get tickets.

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake have added extra days of touring and a designated driver touring pass to the group’s annual Wine & Herb touring program.  The touring pass event takes place weekends in May 2012.  Each of the 28 wineries will feature an herb-inspired VQA wine and food pairing.

“Wine & Herb is the second longest running touring pass program offered by the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and one of the most popular,” remarks Laurie Richardson, chair of the Wine & Herb committee, “It seemed like the ideal event to launch these two new touring pass event initiatives.”

ON_NIAG_WINE_4687Wine & Herb is an ideal opportunity for visitors of wine country to spend time exploring the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and savouring the region’s terroir wines.  The event will now include Fridays, in addition to Saturdays and Sundays to tour and taste. Touring pass holders are welcome to tour and taste from 11 am to 5 pm on May 4/5/6, 11/12/13, 18/19/20 and 25/26/27.

The launch of the designated driver touring pass is a reflection of the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s commitment to encouraging visitors to tour and taste responsibly. Designated driver touring passes are $30 per person (plus applicable taxes, limit one per purchase) and entitle the holder to a food pairing and non-alcoholic beverage at each of the member wineries.

Wine & Herb touring passes are now available to buy online here or by calling 905.468.1950.  Touring passes are available at the special price of $38 per person (plus applicable taxes) until April 15, 2012. After April 15, touring passes will be $43 per person (plus applicable taxes).  Touring passes entitle the holder to one wine and food pairing at each of the 28 member wineries any of the event weekends.

Each winery had the opportunity to select an herb to showcase and it was then up to winemakers to determine which of their VQA wines would best complement the herb. The decision on how to present the herb as a delectable culinary pairing is a process unique to each winery.

Highlighting the 2011 TripAdvisor designation of Niagara-on-the-Lake as Canada’s #1 Food & Wine Destination, a number of the wineries will be working with local restaurants and suppliers creating food matches that use regional ingredients and highlight the herbs and the wines selected.

Local garden centre, Mori Gardens, will be partnering with the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake to supply the herbs on display at each winery.
