Legendary Sandhill winemaker Howard Soon is calling it a day

A legend in B.C. winemaking is calling it a day. Howard Soon, the master winemaker for Sandhill Wines, is retiring, according to the Craig McDonald, VP of winemaking for the Peller Estates family of wines, which owns Sandhill. Here is his statement.

It is with respect and admiration that I announce the retirement of Howard Soon, Master Winemaker – Sandhill Wines.

Since joining Calona Wines in 1980, Howard stands as the longest serving Winemaker in Canada — amassing an incredible 37 consecutive vintages.

In 1997 Howard ambitiously launched a new era for Canadian wine which would later go on to define the notion of Terroir in British Columbia. The release of Sandhill ‘Small Lot’ wines reflects Howard’s pioneering spirit and remains as the definitive example of ‘Single Vineyard’ Winemaking in BC — a true testament to Howard’s drive and vision.

Further collaboration with key growers with unique vineyard sites led Howard and Sandhill to countless awards and accolades on the show circuit including the Founder’s Award from the Okanagan Wine Festival in 1998, the first BC Winemaker to receive a gold medal at the Chardonnay du Monde in France and most notably a clean sweep at the 2009 Canadian Wine Awards – Best Red wine of show, Best White wine of show and Best Canadian Winery.
More recently Howard received the Vancouver Wine Festival ‘Spirited Industry Professional’ in 2015.

Howard’s legacy continues on with Sandhill and with the many Winemakers he has mentored over the years, all respecting his experience, wisdom and dedication to their learning.
As a fellow Winemaker, I will remain in awe at his depth of knowledge, dedication to the craft and unwavering passion toward never compromising wine quality. Indeed, Howard has served the wine consumer well and has touched so many industry professionals along the way it’s too numerous to count.

In his retirement Howard plans on spending valuable time with his family, traveling and volunteer community work at home in his beloved Kelowna.

Howard’s last day of work at Sandhill will be ‪Monday July 24.

Please join me in wishing Howard health and happiness as he embarks on the next chapter of life and be sure to thank him personally for his invaluable contributions to each of you and us all at APL.
