LCBO to offer rare beer via lottery

Rare beer autioned off at $115.

TORONTO — The Liquor Control Board of Ontario has just 70 bottles of a rare, strong — and very expensive — beer from Boston brewer Samuel Adams.

The beer, called Utopias, will retail for $114.95 for a 710 mL bottle. The bottles will only be offered online and by phone, and those orders will receive a randomly selected number for a lottery. Those with winning numbers will be able to buy a bottle.

“This is the same process that the LCBO uses to offer rare, limited-edition wines through its Vintages fine wine and premium spirits business unit,” the LCBO said in a release. “Given the very limited availability of this product, only one order per customer will be accepted and allocation will be limited to one bottle per customer.”

Orders for the beer, which is 27% alcohol, will be accepted Jan. 6 at 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Jan. 13. Orders will be shipped to the buyer’s local LCBO store.

The 2009 beer is a blend of different batches of beer, some that have been aged up to 16 years. A portion of the limited-release beer was aged in single-use bourbon casks from the Buffalo Trace Distillery while other parts spent time in Portuguese muscatel finishing casks, as well as sherry, brandy and cognac casks. The flavour, the Samuel Adams website says, is “reminiscent of a deep, rich, vintageport, fine cognac or aged sherry.”
