Note: Legendary Ontario winemaker Carlo Negri died on Sunday. This is the news release from Colio Estates in Lake Erie North Shore where Carlo  made wines for over 30 years.

It is with profound sadness that Colio Estate Wines announces the passing of Carlo Negri, an esteemed member of the Colio family for over 30 years.

Carlo had been unwell for many months and fought valiantly and with grace as his health continued to decline. His wife and Colio VP Winery Operations, Patricia Negri, had been by his side throughout his ordeal and was with Carlo when he passed away yesterday afternoon.

italian-pic-wine-carlo2Carlo Negri, Master Winemaker, was Colio’s first winemaker, arriving from Italy in 1980, and was instrumental in the development of Colio’s winery, brands and reputation in the Ontario wine industry. He was a mentor to many, both within Colio and throughout the industry, always available to provide support and assistance to other winemakers, growers and winery leaders.

His hard work and dedication brought Carlo many accolades and he has left a legacy of acclaimed winemaking and humble professionalism as well as the recognition of his vital role in the establishment of the Lake Erie North Shore viticultural area as a world class wine producing region.

Carlo devoted over 30 years to Colio and upon his retirement from a most distinguished career with us he continued to provide invaluable guidance as our winemaking consultant and committed mentor to our winery and cellar staff. His quiet demeanor, strength of character and passion for his craft will be greatly missed but his reputation and contributions to our industry will long be remembered.

Funeral details can be found through James Sutton Funeral Home in Amherstburg, 519-736-2134 or here.
