Hillebrand announces wine and jazz lineup

Niagara-on-the-Lake —  For 21 years, Hillebrand Jazz at the Winery has been bringing premier Canadian Jazz talent to Niagara Wine Country.  On Saturday, July 10, 2010, Emilie-Claire Barlow will headline the 21st year of Hillebrand Jazz at the Winery alongside Denzal Sinclaire; the Richard Underhill Quintet and the Jake Wilkinson Quintet featuring Michelle Willis.

Hillebrand‘Canada’s vocal-jazz jewel…’ Emilie-Claire Barlow, was named Female Vocalist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards in 2008.  Her 2007 release The Very Thought Of You, topped the Canadian jazz charts and earned her a nomination for a Juno Award.  Emilie-Claire’s performance of ‘There Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens’ at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala was nominated for a Gemini Award in the same year.  In 2009, she released Haven’t We Met?, which jumped to one on the Jazz charts in Canada and topped the iTunes Jazz charts around the world.

Toronto-born vocalist/pianist/composer, Denzal Sinclaire has earned his reputation as Canada’s most popular male jazz vocalist.  Denzal’s trademark is the joyfulness in his voice and for him singing is as natural as breathing. A multiple Juno Award nominee and recipient of the 2004 National Jazz Award for Best Album, he has graced the stages of numerous high-profile jazz festivals, performed with symphony orchestras, and starred in his own one hour television special for BRAVO!  Denzal has also been inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame.

A veteran of Toronto’s jazz scene, saxophonist Richard Underhill has just released his third album as a leader in Kensington Suite and is the leader of the Shuffle Demons.  His music features a mix of jazz, bossa, drum’n’bass, rock and modern rhythmic influences with plenty of groove.  Richard’s Qunitet is rounded out with Sly Juhas on drums, William Carn playing the trombone, Dave Restivo on the piano and Artie Roth on bass.

Jake Wilkinson has assembled a swinging rhythm section of pianist Mark Eisenman, drummer Joel Haynes and the fine young bassist Jon Meyer.  Singer Michelle Willis, ‘a remarkably brilliant sensation in the Canadian jazz scene,’garners frequent comparisons to Nancy Wilson and Norah Jones.  Added to all of this, of course, is the leader Jake Wilkinson has been championed as ‘the finest soloist to emerge from the latest generation of jazz musicians in Toronto’.

The annual Hillebrand Jazz at the Winery began in 1989 with the intent of bringing premier Canadian jazz talent to Niagara Wine Country and serving it up with premium wines and Wine Country cuisine.

Originally a two day, ‘bring-your-own-lawn chair’ event, the concert has evolved into a single day best-in-class jazz event with a variety of different ticket options and experiences available.  These experiences include: Vineyard Lawn Seating, Trius Red Lounge, Backstage Pass and Hillebrand Winery Restaurant Patio Seating.

Hillebrand Winery’s best vintages will be sold alongside the finest Wine Country fare in Chef Frank Dodd’s Market, where all of the food is seasonally inspired and locally sourced.
