Creekside Estate Winery, maker of some of Niagara’s best big red wines, including the multi-awarded Broken Press Syrah, has been sold.

Winery owner and founder Laura McCain sold the estate to the Equity Wine Group.

“I am extremely proud of the numerous accomplishments and innovations achieved by Creekside over its 14 year history, but the time has come for me to exit the wine industry as I turn my focus to my other business ventures.” said McCain.

“I have no doubt that Creekside will continue to be an industry leader as an innovator of premium VQA wines, given the excellent team that is in place at the winery, and under the guidance of its new ownership.”

Equity Wine Group is a relatively new company in the Canadian wine marketplace and is doing things a little differently. Equity Wine Group’s initial enterprise is Sideroad Twenty Cellars — a direct to consumer sales group representing a wide variety of premium VQA and import brands as well proprietary brands — Sideroad Twenty and Red Tractor Wines.

“We are thrilled at this opportunity to add a winery and a team of such distinguished pedigree to our business portfolio” said Andrew Howard, President of Equity Wine Group.

“Creekside Estate Winery has a clear vision to make some of Ontario’s very finest wines and to do it in a way that is truly innovative. We believe that doing things a bit differently will be a key component of the way we go about our business of making and selling wine”.

Matt Loney, marketing and sales director for the Creekside, told Wines In Niagara, that the current team will remain at the winery.

“The team was as important to them as the product,” Loney said. “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. They aren’t interested in reinventing Creekside.”

The team of investors and business people bring together a wide-variety of skill sets, said Loney, which will help the winery. “The more minds and resources,” Loney said, the better it is for Creekside.

Established in 1998, Creekside Estate Winery continues to focus on hand crafted premium VQA wines from the Niagara Peninsula.

The winery, located in Jordan, has had a 14-year history of being regarded as one of the leading producers and innovators in the Ontario wine industry. Creekside was recently awarded Vineyard Innovator of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards, was selected as a top 10 ranked winery in Canada by the Canadian Wine Awards, was top award winner for 4 of the past 5 Cuvee Wine Competitions and, Creekside’s winemaker, Rob Power, was chosen as Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 Ontario Wine Awards.
