Note: Two wines from Niagara have been named the official VQA wines of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly. Here’s the news release sent by the Grape Growers of Ontario.

The Grape Growers of Ontario, along with the Honourable Speaker of the Legislature, Dave Levac of Brant County, hosted the Annual Wine Tasting event at Queen’s Park on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

Bill George, Chair of the Grape Growers of Ontario, along with Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario, are pleased to announce that the following wines have been chosen as the official wines of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly for 2012-13:

Red Wine: 2011 Conspiracy from The Foreign Affair Winery, Vineland

White Wine:  2009 Burning Ambition from Small Talk Vineyards, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Bill George commented that “the Grape Growers of Ontario were pleased to host the 34th annual Wines of the Legislative Assembly tasting event and I extend congratulations to both The Foreign Affair and Small Talk Vineyards on their selection.”

“The two wines chosen reflect the connection between 100% Ontario grown grapes and the winemakers who craft these wines,” says Debbie Zimmerman. “As the Grape Growers of Ontario celebrate our 65th anniversary, I congratulate all of Ontario’s wineries on producing top quality VQA wines.”

“We are honoured to have our 2011 Conspiracy (ripasso style) selected as the official red wine at Queen’s Park for 2013,” says Len Crispino (very top photo, with wife Marisa and Honourable Speaker Dave Levac). “While informed by Old World tradition, this wine is a unique Canadian innovation with creative adaptations of appassimento techniques. This recognition further strengthens our belief that with passion, risk and support from life’s conspirators, dreams can be realized.”

Members of Provincial Parliament gathered to select the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s official red and white VQA wine to be served at legislative functions throughout 2013. Participants tasted and marked their preferences on a voting ballot to determine which wines would be selected from five Ontario VQA wineries. The Grape Growers of Ontario thank the Honourable Speaker Dave Levac and look forward to continuing the tradition of the Legislative Wine Tasting with him in the future.

We thank the members of the Ontario Legislature for choosing our wine.” (above, Jacqueline Boyl and Lambert Hunse with Honourable Speaker Dave Levac).
