The Vinemount Velo: Touring Niagara’s Wine Route on Two Wheels

DSC00220By Mike Lowe
Whether you do it for sport, as part of a healthy lifestyle or just plain fun, cycling has become a growing pastime for many Canadians and in Niagara we are blessed with some of the best roads and trails that wind their way through wine country.

Five local wineries have teamed up to offer a way to experience fine wine and great food while enjoying the scenery on two wheels. DSC00209Dubbed Vinemount Velo, each tour is a progressive, five-course lunch where cycling enthusiasts follow a mapped route from winery to winery. I participated in the first tour last year and I am pleased that there will be three such tours this year.
DSC00212 DSC00218 DSC00219 DSC00222Tours start with breakfast at Aure Wines before heading out to Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery, Calamus Estate Winery, Vieni Wines & Spirits and De Sousa Vineyards. The menu offers light, nutritious dishes which sustain riders between stops and the ride concludes with a wine and cheese reception back at Aure.

The purchase of wine is not a problem — a vehicle follows the group to transport your purchases back to the finish. Thankfully, the organizers strategically placed the longest stretches of riding at the beginning of the tour.

A circular route of approximately 40 km in length traverses the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation.

The first velo is scheduled for July 27th. Click here for contact information, route details and ticket purchases.
