Calamus winery in Niagara sold to local buyers

In Niagara

In an open letter to its wine club members, Calamus Estate Winery owners Derek Saunders and Pat Latin (pictured below) announced the sale of their unique winery near Balls Falls in Niagara as of Sept. 5.

Peter and Rosalee Van-Helsdingen are the new owners.

This is the letter sent out in its entirety (word is Calamus is celebrating all weekend with bubbly, special bottles and lots of deals on wines).

It is with a little sadness and much anticipation that we would like to announce the sale of Calamus Estate Winery.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Calamus days, our many Calamus friends and the entire experience within the Ontario wine industry. Thank you. Thank you.

19 years ago we bought our first property and started on this wild roller coaster journey and the time is right to get off and pass the torch. We look forward to time with family and friends, to travelling and new projects all while good health and mobility are still in our favour!

We are thrilled to announce that Peter and Rosalee Van-Helsdingen and family will be taking the Calamus reins as of September 5th. Peter and Rosalee are the owners of Feastivities Events and Catering serving the Niagara region since Peter’s father started the company in 1971.

The company includes divisions for Event Planning, Food Service Consulting and a separate Wedding Division. Feastivities’ experienced team of professional Event Planners currently serve Niagara’s finest venues and will continue to operate out of several locations with Calamus as their newest addition. Our new barrel cellar, covered crush pad and expanded decks will all be put to terrific use. The retail store will continue to offer award winning wine at superb value, the wine club will thrive and the telescope is staying. We are certain there will be changes but Peter and Rosalee will be listening to you and your needs!

We are excited that their enthusiasm will continue our dream and more.

We will be around for an extended transition period, helping in any way we can. Drop in and say au revoir (but after Sept 5th we might be on the golf course!)
