ARTVINO names top wines from Prince Edward County

The medalists of the sixth annual 2010 ARTEVÏNO Wine Competition Awards were released June 1, with five wines earning gold medals by rating 90 points or better in a blind tasting competition open to wines produced in Prince Edward and Northumberland counties.

On May 10, a panel of eight judges led by David Lawrason, founder of the Canadian Wine Awards and wine columnist for Toronto Life, gathered at the Inn at Huff Estate to blind taste more than 75 entries. Others on the panel included Michael Pinkus, Ontario Wine Review, Billy Munnelly of  Billy’s Best Bottles, wine book author, broadcaster and recipient of the Order Of Canada, Tony Aspler, Konrad Ejbich of CBC Radio, Master Sommelier John Szabo, Remy Charest of Quebec City, and Shari Darling of the Peterborough Examiner.

The gold, silver and bronze medalists plus other wines from the wineries involved in the competition will be poured on June 19 at the ARTEVÏNO Art and Wine Festival being held at Picton’s Crystal Palace from noon to 4 pm; then at participating restaurants in Prince Edward County and Belleville that same evening. Both these events are organized by the Quinte Arts Council and the Prince Edward County Arts Council. The competition was assisted by Sadie Darby of the Ontario Wine  Society and the Wine Writers Circle of Canada.

The top scoring white and red wines as well as the recipient of the Jonathan Welsh Memorial Award, named for the co-founder of ARTEVÏNO, will be announced at the June 19 event.
Each winery that won a gold or silver award at the ARTEVÏNO wine Competition will be presented with a beautiful medallion produced by Marshman Jewelers and all medal winners receive a framed certificate designed by they integrated inc..

This year there will be a record number of artists, wineries and restaurant/caterers involved to showcase the creative talents of the entire Quinte region represented at ARTEVÏNO . The artists and galleries participating are Gabi Von Gans, Tina Osborne, Marion Casson, The Belleville Art Association, Amanda Bing, Marc Bourdon, Sherry Martin, Sharon Lee, Robert Worling, Marta Smith, Terry Williams, Heather Inwood-Montrose, Marie Timbers, Stasha Novac, Jeanette Campbell, Kim Klaver, Linda Phipps-Nicoll, The Rossi Family, Paul Hill, Peter Paylor, Connie Yrjola – Glamour Junkie Jewellery, Funktional Art and Design (FAD), Oeno Gallery, Jesus Estevez, Michael Macleod, Tara Wilkinson, Jeff Keary Activearts, Aiden Haley, Viola Michalska, LaLaLand Glass Studio, Donna Bonin, Amelie Koning, Gallery ArtPlus, Brigitte Rittinger, Doug Robinson, Tracy Douglas, Martina Escudero-Wolf, Carryl Postma and Steven Draper.  There will also be displays from Taste the County’s Arts Trail, the Prince Edward County Arts Council and the Quinte Arts Council.

There will be a fabulous selection of regional wines including Bergeron Estates Winery, Black Prince Winery, Casa Dea Estates, Closson Chase Vineyards, Del-Gatto Estates Winery, Fieldstone Estates Winery, The Grange of Prince Edward County & Estate Winery, Harwood Estate Vineyards, Hillier Creek Estates Winery, Karlo Estates Winery, Keint-he Winery & Vineyards, Norman Hardie Winery and Vineyard, Rosehall Run Vineyards, Sandbanks Estates Winery, Huff Estates Winery and Waupoos Estates Winery.

To add to the enjoyment of the afternoon, there will be scrumptious offerings by Currah’s Café and Catering, Urban Herb Catering, Capers Brasserie and Wine Bar, L’Auberge de France, Blumen Garden Bistro, The Waring House, Claramount Inn & Spa, Earl & Angelo’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant, East & Main Bistro, Dinkel’s Restaurant and Courtyard, Paulo’s Trattoria and Fifth Town Artisan Cheese.

Look for special ARTEVÏNO Award-Winning Dinner menus, featuring the award-winning wines, paired with delicious three-course dinners, created by the chefs of many of these restaurants, which will be held on Saturday, June 19 after the event at the Crystal Palace.  Check out ARTVINO after June 1, when the menus and more information regarding the dinners will be available on the website.

Tickets are $35 for the afternoon at the Crystal Palace, including a souvenir wine glass and 10 taste tickets, and are available online.  Tickets can also be purchased at the Quinte Arts Council, 36 Bridge Street East, Belleville (call 613-962-1232), at the Prince Edward County Arts Council, 280 Main Street, Suite 103, Picton, at participating wineries and at many other locations that will be listed on the website. For $95 you can enjoy the ARTEVÏNO art, wine and food festival, plus a dinner at a restaurant of your choice, which must be booked in advance.
