Pan Cafe, 13th Street Winery team up for exhibition

Beginning Note: I have a soft spot for Pan Cafe, a wonderful restaurant that’s doing such great things with local produce in the heart of the downtown of St. Catharines. It’s a tough place to do business, but Pan’s owners are com

mitted to making it work. As Niagarans, we need to support any initiatives that are beyond the normal fast food, pub-style fare so prevalent in the downtown core. Pan’s latest endeavour, detailed below in the following press release, is something worth checking out. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the wines of 13th Street are involved.

“The Brain Farm” grafts the Pan Cafe with 13th Street Winery to grow pleasure for the senses!

Photo Exhibit runs: September 16th – November 15th, 2010

Opening Reception: Saturday September 18th, 2010. 8pm.

The provocative, often tongue-in-cheek, photographic images from Niagara’s The Brain Farm will adorn the walls of The Pan Cafe, at 120 St. Paul St. in downtown St. Catharines from September 16th to November 15th, 2010.

The show features food paired with wine, paired with bold photographic visuals.

The visual portion follows the eye of the Brain Farm from NOHO New York to dusty New Mexico to Cava-soaked Spain. With subject matter ranging from the beautiful innocent – two young Spanish girls dressed identically blowing bubbles – to the whimsically macabre – two white men, a chicken and a wood saw.

In an affectionate nod to home, Niagara, the show is appropriately placed to run concurrent to the annual Niagara Wine Festival to celebrate the talents of three local growers: the Brain Farm, Pan Café and 13th Street Winery.

“The ideas come from 3rd Ave, the wine from 13th St., and some of the food from the Pan Cafe’s owner’s farm of off 7th St.,” enthuses the Brain Farm’s Kim Odine Van Stygeren. “Hey, c’mon you can’t get more Niagara than that, eh?”

“The idea for us was to create a sensate experience: a fun backdrop that stimulates idea exchange while enjoying the excellent food and wine pairings that Pan and 13th St., have come up with for the show.”

“We love the Pan Cafe, it’s intelligent delicious food, I’m thrilled that it is open for dinner now, and we are huge supporters of 13th Street wine, it’s our closest local winery, 2 minutes away from our studios. ”

The Exhibit runs from September 9th to November 15th, 2010. An Evening reception with special pairing offerings on Saturday, September 18th, 2010, 8pm.

The Brain Farm consists of Kim Odine Van Stygeren and Luke Gillett.

Kim is a contemporary artist, master craftsman and designer. She works in oil on canvas, mixed media sculpture, creates photography and builds furniture. Her work has been featured on various television networks including Bravo Arts Channel, Star!TV, and recently on the documentary

‘Star Portraits’ where her process of painting astronaut Dr Roberta Bondar was filmed live. Her artwork is in 2 museums, as well as private collections around the world. Over the last two decades, she has painted accomplished and exemplary Canadians, like actors Mike Myers and Michael J. Fox, philanthropist Walter Carsen, dancer Veronica Tennent, executive producer Moses Znaimer, as well as the late Canadian artist Agnes Martin. As a master guilder and painter she has also worked on the walls and displays of stores like Armani, Chanel, DKNY, Tiffany’s, among others, as well as the ceiling of a castle in Colorado for a year. After 3 years studying art in Paris, Kim moved to New York City, before settling in Niagara, Ontario.

Luke has spent a decade as a photographer, graphic artist and product designer. He ran the creative department for a sports memorabilia company with such clients as Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe, and spent two years heading the Marketing and Creative for a Niagara winery and Four Diamond restaurant. When not farming brains he is a contract photographer and designer for Niagara College. In the last year his images of HRH Prince Charles and Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Prime Minister of Vietnam have been utilized in print media across the globe. A Toronto transplant, Luke enjoys living a balance of city and rural life in Niagara.

Last year, as photographers, the pair participated in Art City, a St. Catharines art event where they pulled would be passers-by into a local hat shop and took streaky photos of them “in character” wearing a myriad of hats. This past Spring they did an installation piece for a New York City art show, stapling up an entire wall of stuffed animals for bewildered on lookers. Utilizing the wall as a photographic backdrop, the disarming effects of the stuffed animals saw the high brow art patrons dancing, jumping and even mooning the camera.
