Bringing Ontario wines across the border from Canada to U.S.

Americans purchasing Ontario wine for personal use:

There is no federal limit on the amount of alcohol a traveller may import into the U.S. for personal use, however, large quantities might raise the suspicion that the importation is for commercial purposes.

Generally, one liter per person may be entered into the U.S. duty-free by travellers who are 21 or older.

Additional quantities may be entered, although they will be subject to duty and IRS taxes. Duty is generally 3% of value and the IRS excise tax is generally between 21-31cents per 750 ml bottle of wine.

Residents of the United States of American can bring back Ontario wine into the states anytime they want.

After 48 hours or more of visiting Canada, US residents are allowed to bring back 1 litre (33.8 ounces) duty-free, provided they are 21 or over. Generally, 2 bottles (750 ml) each is allowed duty free.

If the duration of the visit is less than 48 hours, US residents are still allowed to buy what they want … they will just be subject to duty and taxes. Residents can always purchase as much Ontario wine as they want and bring it back. As long as the wine is claimed with customs you are OK to do so.

Let’s say you came over for the afternoon and bought a few cases of Ontario wine. When you get to customs, two things can happen:

1)    They charge you duty or

2)     They say go ahead. Even if they charge you duty you are still well ahead of the game

Duty is 3% of the value being imported, and tax is 21 cents to 31 cents per 750 ml bottle depending on the alcohol content. It is to the traveler’s advantage to have a receipt for the wine being imported to prove its value.
